Our Story
While battling cancer in 2024, Sid did some deep soul-searching. His thoughts led him to reflect on how he was still involved in hockey through coaching and broadcasting, how he and players’ parents talked about their love for the game, and how costly the sport had become.
As a young hockey player growing up in Roseau, MN, Sid saw how tough it was for his grandmother, who raised him, to make ends meet but still help him buy hockey sticks when needed. This sports equipment was considered cheap during the 70s and early 80s but was still expensive for her on a factory worker’s wage.
Nowadays, new and custom hockey sticks cost an arm and a leg, even with the innovations in how they are made. Parents can easily spend anywhere from $200-$400 per stick. Sid thought about how he could not have played the game today, given the costs of sticks and equipment. Something had to change. This inspired him to establish Sid’s Sticks and help parents going through what his grandmother went through years ago. For Sid, it’s not about the profit. It’s about giving every player a chance to thrive on the ice.
